Can’t live with them, can’t live without them…
It’s time to turn your attention to “Boys,” Charli XCX‘s brand new single released just in time for Jon ALi’s Blog 11th Birthday. What a gift!
Directed by Charli herself alongside Sarah McColgan, the ridiculously amazing clip sees our “Break The Rules” darling flipping the script on gender roles usually seen in music videos by getting the men to do all the activities normally used to sexualise women, such as washing cars, licking guitars and playing with puppies.
It’s not just any boys, either — it’s a veritable who’s who of high-profile boys. Joe Jonas, Diplo, Rostam, Wiz Khalifa, D.R.A.M., Kaytranada, Stormzy, Riz Ahmed and Swet Shop Boys, Jack Antonoff, Mark Ronson, Flume, Ty Dolla $ign, Joey Bada$$, Chromeo, Charlie Puth, Khalid, and tons more appear in the boy-stuffed visual. A true treat!
And as for the song itself? Oh, right! It’s fantastic too! Similar to the shimmering, more experimental stuff featured on her stellar Number 1 Angel mixtape, “Boys” – co-crafted with LAUV, Emily Warren, Jerker Hansson and Cass Lowe – comes equipped with a subtle electro-pop pulse that feels very fresh and a little Nintendo-like. It may require a few listens to properly appreciate, but “Boys” is without a doubt a solid pop cut – it’s also very signature Charli, she stays consistent.
What can I say? Charli has been incapable of letting us down as of late. I love everything about this visual and song. She deserves more recognition!
