I better not catch you crying, ’cause Grace Mitchell has done it yet again!
On Friday (July 14), 19-year-old singer, songwriter and genre-bending Portland native premiered “Come Back For You,” the third taste off of her upcoming project due out later this year via Republic Records. The still-untitled collection reportedly delivers additional songwriting contributions from Leland (Selena Gomez), Julie Frost (Beyonce), Teddy Geiger (Shawn Mendes), Cara Salimando (Dua Lipa), Andrew Watt (Rita Ora), Emily Warren (Sean Paul) and Justin Tranter (Imagine Dragons).
For her brand new cut (co-written and produced alongside Martin Johnson), Grace has gone and ditched the gritty guitars and high-energy sonics of “NOW” and “Cali God,” instead providing a soothing, lush ‘n dreamy slice of dream pop — and it’s even better than whatever you expected.
“I’ll come back for you/ You’ll see me again but it’s not that simple/ Light the final fuse, we’ll work it out/ It’s not easy to see your face now/ It’s not easy to walk away/ I’ll say it a million times/ I’ll come back for you…,” she gently coos across the inviting, sensual ’80’s-tinged production. The post-breakup gem is sort of like a cross between Carly Rae Jepsen, Shura, and Tegan & Sara, so she’s in very good company.
The song is yet another representation of Grace‘s playful sonic style and ability to tackle any genre. Honestly, is there anything Grace can’t conquer? Answer: I think not! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to play “Come Back For You” on repeat from now until forever.
