By now, we should all be accustomed to the fact that if Sia has got new music out, you better believe it’s going to come packed with an emotional punch to the heart. (The good kind, obvi.)
Fresh off the release of her soaring Wonder Woman theme “To Be Human,” the singing-songwriting Queen has unleashed yet another brand new offering called “Free Me” – and yeah, she’s really gone and done it now.
“Free Me,” along with its Blake Martin-directed music video, takes on an unbelievably heavy and real subject, so naturally, Sia had to pull out some big names to help her make an ever bigger impact. In the visual, Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldana plays an expectant mother who has just been told she has HIV. In a narration by Oscar-winner Julianne Moore, it’s revealed that Zoe will pass the disease onto her unborn child if left untreated.
Sia captures the shock of this moment in the most devastatingly beautiful way – representing the shock of having your own body turn against you by having Zoe carried along through a intense ballet, choreographed by Ryan Heffington, that she refuses to partake in – she is broken. However, there is a way to move forward with hope. After a consultation with her doctor, Zoe is guided through the steps by a helper and eventually she is able to break free on her own as Sia‘s voice guides her, shouting: “So free me/ Oh free me!” The video ends with Zoe emotionally carrying her presumably healthy baby and a call to support the #endHIV Campaign in collaboration with the Abzyme Research Foundation.
In addition, Sia is donating all of the song’s proceeds to the cause. The charity is raising money to fast-track a test of a potential vaccine against HIV, and fund clinical trials of the potentially life-saving discovery. Learn more at their official website!
