In between penning songs for Zara Larsson, Shakira, Linkin Park, Bleachers and most recently Selena Gomez‘s latest “Bad Liar,” Julia Michaels has found the time to launch a music career of her very own. The 23-year-old pop princess on-the-rise is already one of this year’s biggest breakout stars thanks to the massive success of her debut single “Issues,” which is currently holding the #11 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
This week, Julia does it yet again with “Uh Huh,” the second official single off of her upcoming debut Nervous System EP, which is due out later this year.
Where “Issues” dealt with accepting the ups and downs of being in a relationship, “Uh Huh” – produced by Mattman & Robin, and co-penned by Julia‘s songwriting partner Justin Tranter – tackles all the exciting and inexplainable feels you deal with when you’re actually falling deep in love. Unsurprisingly, she nails it…
“It’s electric, how my lipstick/ Makes its own way right into your kiss, and…/ It’s pathetic, how we both get/ Kinda fucked up hanging on each other/ We’re ahead now, should we slow down?/ Should we slow down now?,” she sings over plucked guitar strings on the opening verses before rapidly changing tempos, leaping from smoothly crooned verses, to spirited yells on the monster of a chorus: “Uh-huh!/ I think you’re movin’ in too close/ But I think that it’s my body wanting it the most, like Uh-huh!/ I don’t know what it is I feel/ But I know it’s my emotions going in for the kill, like Uh-huh!“
Once again, Julia serves up a pop slice that is brighter, bolder and fresher than what any other pop starlet is doing right now – And that, my friends, speaks volumes. God bless the gift that is Julia Michaels!
