I really can’t be bothered ya’ll sleeping on my girls The Aces — because they’re serving up everything I need right now. Honestly. Truly.
Following the release of their instant earworm “Physical” in April, along with its fabulous accompanying music video, the fierce foursome – sisters Cristal (vocals/guitar) and Alisa Ramirez (drums), Katie Henderson (guitarist) and McKenna Petty (bassist) – are ready to give us more to work with in the form of: “Baby Who,” the third official cut from their upcoming debut, I Don’t Like Being Honest EP (due out June 23).
On “Baby Who,” The Aces have gone ahead and slowed things down a bit, providing a soothing, soulful throwback production–similar to sounds of Dev Hynes, or perhaps even Jessie Ware with a little Carly Rae Jepsen thrown into the mix.
Calmly crooning atop a dreamy, bouncing ’80’s pop-meets-R&B beat filled with funky bass plucks, lone piano chords and subtle flourishes of electronica, frontwoman Cristal declares her independence: “I don’t need ya now/ I don’t need ya now/ Baby Who?/ Now you want me bad/ But I don’t want you back/ Baby Who?,” she sings on the immediate hook. The lush vocals, layered and earnest, cut deep.
“Baby Who” is yet another winning representation of The Aces’ genuinely impressive style and maturity – they’ve got me hooked. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to play this one on repeat from now until the end of time.
“When we wrote ‘Baby Who‘ we had just signed our first record deal. We were packed in this small room in Los Angeles with only a guitar and laptop,” Cristal told The FADER. “The energy was crazy and electric and we just felt really excited and empowered. ‘Baby Who’ is about not needing anyone or anything but yourself to be happy. A lot of people think ‘Baby Who’ is about a person or specifically a relationship, but for us it’s about overcoming anything in your life that’s holding you back.”
