My boys are back!!
Ever since Majid Jordan broke out with their 2013 Drake smash “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” the two – Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman (the group’s singer and producer, respectively) – have only continued to impress, from 2014’s A Place Like This EP all the way up to their eponymous full-length debut — which also just happened to be one of 2016’s very best.
And now, they’ve really gone and done it.
“Phases” — once again helmed by the duo themselves — is the first taste of what’s to come from their next album, and… oof! Seemingly inspired by Majid‘s time as an 18-year-old (he moved from Bahrain to Toronto, where he started studying business), the semi-optimistic, very-personal meditation on life sees the twosome marching toward the future with uncertainty while looking back and recalling the constant changes in their life.
“I keep going through different phases/ I stay going through different phases/ I keep going through different phases,” Majid gently repeats across the pounding kick drums and their signature moody synthesizers. In the past, these two have had a track record of keeping it pretty general with their lyrics, in an anyone could relate to this sense.
“Phases” marks a shift from that, or in this case, a new phase – a phase in which Majid are beginning to dig a little deeper and get a little more personal (raw). LOVE!
