Cashmere Cat and Ariana Grande just can’t quit collaborating, and for that, we’re thankful! The third collaboration (the others were “Be My Baby” and “Adore“) from the duo was released today, April 28, as part of Cashmere Cat‘s new album, “9.” Co-written by Cashmere himself alongside Ari, Sia, Benjamin Levin, and Frank Romano, “Quit” features our dangerous woman singing about a tale as old as time. No, not that one… She already did that. I’m talking about the other one: hooking up with a bad boy and regretting it later.
Low-key and tropical, “Quit” sonically stays in the same lane as previous Cashmere/Ari collabs but seems to explore more adult themes (“I just want you to lay me down and we’ll f*ck the pain away“). It’s an otherwise subtle little bop that’s not trying to be anything grand; she just wants to be with her man (“When you call, my heart starts to roar / I always want more“) even though inside, she knows she shouldn’t (“I’m gonna regret it“). The song manipulates her vocals, as is common with Cashmere productions, but I’m cool with it… We already know how talented she is. Oh, and did anyone else think of Brokeback Mountain when they heard the lyrics to this song? Just a thought!
If serviced to radio, I could see “Quit” being a modest hit for the pair. It’s also nice to hear new material from Ariana while we wait for her next album, which may or may not be finished already and may or may not be produced by Pharrell. As for “9,” it also includes collaborations from other artists of the moment, including Kehlani, Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, and The Weekend.
“9,” featuring “Quit,” is now available to purchase and stream!
