Maybe we should re-name this year to be “2017 (featuring Nicki Minaj),” because Q1 has been chock full of her. Fresh off releasing the video for “Run Up” yesterday, the Queen of Rap has released yet another feature, this time alongside the Joe Jonas-fronted band, DNCE. This is the second Jonas collaboration for Onika this year, for those keeping track. “Bom Bidi Bom” with Nick Jonas came out in February to support the release of “Fifty Shades Darker.”
The DNCE/Nic collab, “Kissing Strangers,” was teased this week in typical fashion: Instagram photos, tweets (there’s a new Twitter account dedicated to Nicki‘s hat), memes, and even a 1-800 number that you could call to hear a preview of the song. The sound of the song is distinctly DNCE with its strong bass, repetitive hook (where as “Cake By The Ocean” had “ah yah yah yah yah,” now we have “nah-nah, nah-nah, nah-nah, nah-nah“), and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about smooching people we don’t exactly know. It’s a bouncy summer anthem for us single folks… We should be having fun until the right one comes along (“Kissing strangers til I find someone I love / Kissing strangers til I find someone I trust“)! Onika brings the song home with a heavily accented verse about the usual topics: how she always wins, how she plans to tongue her man down, and how drippy her kitty is.
After all of these features, I’m ready to hear more solo material from Nicki and for her to begin the campaign for her new album. She has only appeared as the lead artist on three 2017 tracks (only one of which remains in the Hot 100) , and I’m curious to hear what she has in store for this next solo era. In the meantime, I’ll take her any way I can get her, even if it’s on a DNCE song. As for them… I’ve seen them twice in concert and they’re super fun, so I hope “Kissing Strangers” will make an impact this year. Only time will tell as the competition for Song of the Summer heats up!
“Kissing Strangers” will be available everywhere tomorrow (April 14)!
