Country music is not a genre you read about too often on our site, but we couldn’t let the day pass without introducing you to a new song by Thomas Rhett and Maren Morris called “Craving You.”
Singer-songwriter and country music royalty (his dad is country legend Rhett Akins), Thomas Rhett, has been releasing slick country tunes with a pop edge since 2013. In an effort to avoid confusion and to create a career outside of his father’s shadow, he dropped Akins from his stage name and instead uses his first and middle names professionally. If you’re unfamiliar with his music, check out “T-Shirt,” “Make Me Wanna,” and his most recent smash hit, “Die A Happy Man.” Once deemed a member of the bro-country movement alongside Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line, Rhett has worked to defy those stereotypes with the exploration of new sounds, something he addressed in his most recent interview with GQ.
On Friday, March 30, the first single off Rhett‘s upcoming third album was released. “Craving You,” featuring Maren Morris, is an I-Can’t-Quit-You kind of jam set over a pop-meets-country beat. Lyrically, the song doesn’t cover much new ground (yes, the song does mention country music mainstays: cigarettes and 100 proof alcohol), but musically, it’s his poppiest endeavor yet. “Craving You,” by his own admission, is basically an “80’s pop song.” But regardless of where the soon-to-be dad is going with his music, this song is catchy AF.
Adding an extra oomph to “Craving You” is Maren Morris, who, if you don’t know, is one of music’s most promising new artists. Fresh off her Grammy win for Best Country Solo Performance for “My Church,” the singer-songwriter provides background vocals throughout the song. We have to take this time to say that if you haven’t listened to Maren‘s debut album, “Hero,” you are missing out! Seriously, it’s one of the best albums of 2016. It only makes sense for these two on-the-rise superstars to team up for a song, and we’re already craving more.
