Another week, another Nicki Minaj track! Thursday brought us Nicki fans another treat as David Guetta released his latest single, “Light My Body Up,” featuring the rapper and her mentor, Lil Wayne. Originally scheduled for release on Friday, March 24, the DJ surprised fans by making the song available a day early. For those keeping a tally, this will be the fourth collaboration for Guetta and Minaj, following “Where Them Girls At,” “Turn Me On,” and “Hey Mama.”
Guetta teased “Light My Body Up” earlier this year in a press interview, stating that he is “obsessed” with Nicki and that fans would be impressed with her vocal prowess on the track. So now that we’ve heard the song, the question is… Does she sing? Yes. But is that all she does? Of course not. She’s Nicki Minaj, after all. It appears that Minaj is using this release as another opportunity to fire shots at an unnamed female rapper. With such lines as “She’ll never been queen / So now she got a vendetta / I ain’t talkin’ bout David / When I say I’ma gett’a,” it’s really no secret who she’s coming for.
“Light My Body Up” is a departure from Nicki‘s past three Guetta collabs, with the latest bringing a darker, sexier, more down-tempo/trap sound. The slinky beat (does anyone hear shades of “Beez In The Trap” here?), which drops during the chorus, is made for late nights and dark clubs, and features Onika‘s come-hither vocals beckoning to her lover with fire-themed metaphors (“I’m gasoline / You’re fire / You’re burning me down / Light my body up“). Lil Wayne comes in toward the end with a verse that doesn’t add much to the song, but let’s be honest: this is a vehicle for the Queen, and Wayne is just in her court here.
I’ve been waiting for an artist to drop an undeniable bop in 2017 (remember that by this time last year, we already had “Work” and “Work From Home,” among several others), and I’m not sure if this is it. I love it because I love Guetta and Nicki, but if we’re talking mass appeal… It could light up the charts or it could fizzle out quickly. Another thing to consider is: how much longer will this rap beef continue? Will Nicki allow this fight to color all of her new releases in this new era? If nothing else, “Light My Body Up” will certainly add to Nicki’s Hot 100 tally for which she now holds the crown.
“Light My Body Up” is available on Apple Music and Spotify now!
