Ansel Elgort is coming for that pop-prince crown!
But wait? Isn’t Ansel Elgort an actor? Correct! For those blissfully unaware, here’s the deal in brief: Ansel is indeed a 22-year-old actor, he has starred in the 2013 remake of Carrie, The Fault in Our Stars, and most notably the Divergent series, which has earned him a whole bunch of Tumblr-loving stans. Ansel also has quite a few film projects lined up for this year, including Billionaire Boys Club, November Criminals and Baby Driver, which will hit theaters in August.
Apart from acting, Ansel also happens to be a DJ-producer under the stage name Ansolo. He’s released a number of self-produced singles, opened some of The Chainsmokers shows, and has performed at a variety of EDM festivals since 2014. But that’s not all: Ansel sings, too. Yupp, he’s basically a multi-talented lil’ heartthrob.
Ansel signed with Island Records in 2015 and has been busy working on his debut solo album ever since – under his own name this time, respectfully. After dropping an explosive buzz single titeld “Home Alone” back in July, Ansel returns in 2017 with his proper lead single called “Thief.” And… hold onto your knickers kids. This is actually quite good!
“Thief” is sort of like Taylor Swift‘s “Style” meets Tove Lo‘s Lady Wood meets the Drive soundtrack; an ode to destructive fu*k boy habits. “I’ve been living in the darkness/ Shadows in my apartment, heartless/ Taking love just to pill it on parchment/ Next page and I’m out again,” Ansel seductively confesses over chilly waves of pulsating synthesizers. “I’ve been living in the night life/ Lips hit you like a drive by, frost bite/ Ice cold, I mean they cut you like a sharp knife/ Next page and I’m out again.” And then, there’s THAT CHORUS, where he truly showcases his vocal abilities: “Call me a thief/ There’s been a robbery/ I left with her heart/ Tore it apart/ Made no apologies.” YUPP!
I couldn’t have said it any better myself, Ansel. This is genuinely impressive! You really have robbed my heart and tore it apart. A WIN!
“I had created a character while writing and producing this song that was the Thief,” Ansel told Rolling Stone of his alter ego. “I couldn’t wait to bring him to life in the video. For the performance, we wanted something colorful and rich. We went with an all-leather outfit and neon lighting while I sang and danced, like an Eighties dance video. Music should be art. Musicians used to play characters all the time: Bowie, MJ, Freddie Mercury. I’m inspired by those guys [rather than] the modern pop star.”
